Before You Try Another Sleep Method, Read This

If you have Googled baby sleep recently, you have probably been buried in conflicting advice. Sleep train. Do not sleep train. Follow a schedule. Follow their cues. Controlled crying. Never controlled crying. It is exhausting — and it often makes parents feel like they are doing something wrong. If you want a starting point before diving in, our post on infant sleep myths unpacks the most common pieces of advice that do not hold up to scrutiny.
At Embrace Medical on Crown, Dr Kate McCullough is accredited in Neuroprotective Developmental Care — the Possums programs — and takes a different approach to infant sleep. One that starts with the biology, not the rulebook.
What is Possums NDC?
Possums NDC (Neuroprotective Developmental Care) is an evidence-based framework developed by Dr Pamela Douglas at the NDC Institute. It is built on the neuroscience of infant brain development and draws on what research actually tells us about how babies sleep — not what the sleep industry has marketed to parents.
The core idea is this: infant sleep is regulated primarily by the brain's arousal system, not by habit or routine. Babies are not defective sleepers who need fixing. They are neurologically immature, and that is entirely normal.
What does normal infant sleep actually look like?
This is often the most reassuring thing parents hear. Normal infant sleep includes:
- Waking frequently, especially in the early months
- Short sleep cycles — around 45 minutes, compared to adult cycles of 90 minutes
- Needing parental presence to settle
- Feeding to sleep — which is biologically appropriate, not a bad habit
- Variable nights — some good, some hard, with no obvious reason for the difference
Understanding infant mental health and early attunement is part of this picture too — our post on infant mental health explains why the first months of life matter so much for brain development.
What the Possums approach focuses on instead
Rather than teaching babies to sleep through the night on a schedule, the NDC approach looks at the whole picture:
- Your baby's sensory environment — light exposure, noise, stimulation
- Feeding — because unsettled babies are often hungry, uncomfortable, or both
- Parental wellbeing — because exhausted, anxious parents affect the baby's arousal system too
- Responsive parenting — which research consistently shows supports healthy brain development
The parenting relationship itself is also worth investing in. The Circle of Security parenting program at Embrace helps parents understand their child's emotional world and respond more confidently — it complements the sleep work well.
The parental wellbeing piece
Infant sleep struggles do not happen in isolation. They intersect with postnatal mental health, relationship strain, feeding difficulties, and the general shock of early parenthood. Our perinatal health post maps the full scope of perinatal support available at Embrace — it is worth a read if you are navigating more than just sleep.
Sleep deprivation is also one of the more significant drivers of parental stress. Our post on stress and your health covers what chronic sleep deprivation and sustained stress actually do to the body — relevant reading for anyone in the thick of the newborn months.
What a sleep consult looks like at Embrace Medical
These are longer appointments designed to give you the time to actually work through what is going on. You can read more about Dr Kate's approach on her team page. These consults cover:
- Infant sleep patterns and what is developmentally appropriate for your baby's age
- Feeding concerns that may be affecting sleep
- Cry-fuss problems and unsettled behaviour
- Your own sleep deprivation and mental health
- Practical, evidence-based strategies that do not require leaving your baby to cry
When to book
You do not need to be at breaking point to reach out. If you are tired, confused, or just want someone to look at the full picture with you, that is enough of a reason. Early support is almost always more useful than waiting until things feel unmanageable.
