Neuroaffirming GP Care in Wollongong: What It Means and Why It Matters

What Neuroaffirming Care Actually Means , And Why It Matters
April is World Autism Understanding Month. And this year, the theme from Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) is: "If you learn I'm Autistic, I want you to… know, say, do." It is a prompt worth sitting with , especially for healthcare providers.
Because for many neurodivergent people, a trip to the GP is not straightforward. Bright lights, long waits, the pressure to explain yourself quickly and clearly, the feeling that you have to perform being okay , it adds up. And it can mean people avoid getting care they need.
At Embrace Medical on Crown, we have thought carefully about how to do this differently.
What neuroaffirming care looks like in practice
Neuroaffirming care is not a special program or a tick-box exercise. It is an approach , a way of understanding that patients have different needs, and that good care means adapting to the person in front of you.
In practice at Embrace, that means:
- Unhurried appointments. We do not rush. If something takes longer to explain, or if you need more time to find the words, that is fine.
- Flexible communication. Some patients prefer written information. Some prefer to talk things through. Some need questions broken into smaller parts. We follow your lead.
- A calm physical space. Our clinic at 479 Crown Street in West Wollongong is designed to feel warm and comfortable , not clinical or overwhelming.
- Asking rather than assuming. We ask patients what they need, rather than guessing. You are the expert on your own experience.
- Female GPs available. For patients who feel more comfortable seeing a female doctor, all of our GPs are women. Just let us know when you book.
- No judgement. Your differences are not problems to be fixed
Some things worth knowing
Autism is lifelong , not something people grow out of. Many adults receive a diagnosis later in life, particularly women and girls whose signs were missed or dismissed earlier. A late diagnosis is valid, and it can open doors to support that makes a real difference.
ADHD also looks very different from the stereotype. In women and girls especially, it often presents as anxiety, people-pleasing, or difficulty with emotional regulation , not hyperactivity. It is frequently missed.
Masking , hiding neurodivergent traits to fit in , is exhausting and often comes at a cost to mental health. We see that in our patients, and we want Embrace to be a space where you do not have to do that.
