Circle of Security Parenting Program

Circle of Security Parenting Program

Most parents don't need more techniques — they need to understand what their child is actually asking for, and why their own reactions get in the way.

The Circle of Security program gives you that understanding. It draws on decades of attachment research to help parents build something that parenting books rarely address: a genuinely secure relationship with their child, built from the inside out.

What It Is

Circle of Security is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy program grounded in attachment theory — the research that describes how the early relationship between a parent and child shapes a child's sense of safety, their capacity to regulate emotions, and the way they form relationships throughout life.

It's not a parenting course in the conventional sense. There are no checklists or behaviour scripts. The focus is on the relational quality between you and your child — what your child needs from you emotionally, and what gets in the way of you providing it.

According to the Australian Institute of Family Studies, the program is designed to assist parents in providing the emotional support children need to develop secure attachment and resilience. Circle of Security International reports outcomes including strengthened secure attachment, reduced parenting stress, and increased emotional regulation in both parents and children — outcomes that matter well beyond the early years.

What You'll Work On

The program gives parents a supported space to:

  • Understand what secure connection actually looks like in everyday life — not in theory, but in the real moments of parenting
  • Reflect on your own values and what you want your relationship with your child to look and feel like
  • Learn to respond in difficult moments with intention rather than reaction
  • Build your own capacity for regulation — because your groundedness directly shapes your child's sense of safety
  • Develop practical strategies that contribute to lasting secure attachment

That last point is worth sitting with. The Circle of Security doesn't treat parental wellbeing as a side issue. Your ability to feel settled and present is directly connected to your child's development — and the program addresses both.

Who Runs It

Melinda Furbank (she/her), Accredited Mental Health Social Worker and psychotherapist, facilitates Circle of Security at Embrace Medical on Crown. She brings clinical expertise in attachment-based care, trauma, and family stress — and has worked as a counsellor, senior clinician, and group facilitator across her career.

She also comes to this work as a mum. That combination of professional training and lived experience shapes how she holds the group space: with room for the research and the reality, and without judgment for either.

Melinda's approach is warm, neuro-affirming, and inclusive — grounded in the belief that every family has its own unique rhythm, and that every parent is doing more than they give themselves credit for.

Who It's For

Circle of Security suits parents of young children who want to understand attachment more deeply — whether you're navigating uncertainty about how to respond in difficult moments, finding early parenting harder than expected, or simply wanting to be more intentional in your relationship with your child.

It's not just a program for families in crisis. It's for any parent who is curious, willing to reflect, and ready to do that alongside others in a supported group environment. No referral is needed. No prior knowledge of attachment theory is required.

The Circle of Security program runs from Embrace Medical on Crown, Crown Street, West Wollongong. Contact the clinic directly or visit embracemedical.com.au to check current group availability and register. If you'd like to talk through whether it's the right fit before committing, a conversation with Melinda or one of the Embrace GPs is a good place to start.

FAQs

What does the research show? Outcomes include strengthened secure attachment between parent and child, reduced parenting stress, and increased emotional regulation in both parents and children. (Sources: Australian Institute of Family Studies; Circle of Security International.)

Do I need a GP referral? No referral is needed to enquire or join. You can contact the clinic directly or book online.

What does neuro-affirming mean here? Melinda's facilitation is inclusive of families with neurodiverse members — including ADHD, autism, and sensory differences — treating neurological difference as part of human diversity rather than a problem to be fixed.
